Born in Liverpool in 1966 one of my first childhood memories was of my granddad gathering the whole family together for something very important that was happening on the TV.
It was 'One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!' on the 20th July 1969 Apollo 11 touched down on the moon. I have, since that day, been a sci-fi and Star Trek fan and love to seek out new things boldly go, well, anywhere and everywhere.
I was almost three years old when Neil and Buzz tripped the light fantastic on my second favorite planet, but I still remember it like it was yesterday. As soon as I was old enough to get on my bike I was off exploring, first round the block then much further afield. Started on three wheels then soon was on two. As a teenager I used to cycle 200 miles in a day two or three times a week. I used to ride from Liverpool into North Wales, up to the top of the mountains down into the valleys always ending by following the coast road back towards the Runcorn Bridge, the landmark that told me 'just 20 minutes to home' and a well earned meal.
After being educated it looked like the future was far from rosie, unemployment in Liverpool was at an all time high and the chance of getting a job few and far between.
Through a friend of the family I heard about a job, at Gatwick Airport cleaning cars, but it was a job, and that was what was important. So I had the interview, got the job, had to start three days later so barely had time to get my friends and family together for a farewell drink and it was time to leave.
Working for a car hire company at a busy International Airport was great fun - the things I can do with a car you would not believe. After that I landed a great job with Citroen, 5 years later I found myself looking for a new challenge and the opportunity to join Toyota was too good to turn down. What a fantastic organisation to work for. I learned so much about business, business philosophy, quality products, quality service delivery, business process improvement, and that if you look after your customers in your business the money will look after itself.
6 years later I had one of those stupid bicycle accidents, bought a new bike, new toe clips etc stopped to have a drink and oops I went one way the bike went the other and my ankle went crack. Unable to drive and not able to walk for months I decided that fate had given me an opportunity and some time to find my real calling but it would be a few years before I would dip my toe in the entrepreneurs pool.
But dip I did, and after a very successful time in exhibitions with William Reed, restructuring Taylor Woodrow's technical engineering department and finally working as a business consultant I decided I wanted to start my own business and needed help, advice and support. Did the usual, business link, Sussex Enterprise etc and just got the usual list of consultants to contact at £50 per hour. Not easy to afford as a start up and mainly helping with the what you need to do is - and not the important bit this is how you do it. So I went to a lot of networking meetings, BNI, BOB, B2B and local business groups. But they all seemed the same.
I met Alex McMillan and joined his business club at Gatwick, wow what a breath of fresh air, we actually learned things, things that would help my business, and help me to develop as a person. So I started my own business with the help and support of the group, we worked through ideas together and I helped other members with their businesses.
At one meeting Graham Constantine an NLP Practitioner asked me where I wanted to be in 5 years time. He asked me to think hard about this place, what does it look like, what does it feel like, what can you see, hear, touch. I had never really though too much about this - but I was really thinking about it. In fact I did nothing else but think about it for the 3 months up until we moved there. So we are sitting in our cottage on the side of the mountain, that I used to ride to the top to see the breathtaking views from the Clwydian Mountain range to Snowdonia across to the Irish Sea and the Dee and Mersey estuaries.
2 years later here we are working together launching this new business Club Entrepreneur Worldwide Limited great to see that all that hard work and knowledge gained in not going to be wasted.
